SEM Strategy: Are you Tweeting?

Friday, April 15th, 2011

One of the “fun” jobs of a search engine marketing expert is social media. The social networking platform is a free and easy way for most online businesses to gain brand awareness and make connections with a diverse platform of related niche markets. One of the instantly successful ways, currently, to communicate your website business’ news online is through the social media platform Twitter.

For search engine marketers, Twitter isn’t just a valuable tool for promoting, but an effective way to see the latest trends in social media, and SEO. Some of the top minds in search engine marketing use Twitter, and at this time, are still actively engaging their audiences through meaningful, targeted information and posts. Some of these are easily recognized, like SEOMoz, and Search Engine Land, but the others are personal accounts like Matt Cutts’ (@mattcutts)—he’s the head of Google’s anti-spam team, or Danny Sullivan (@dannysullivan)—who is the former head of Search Engine Watch, and the current co-founder of Search Engine Land, which are both excellent sources of information for SEMs beginning to learn the landscape of the web optimization industry.

Another point to note, as a website promotion tool, Twitter is currently one of the most popular of the social media platforms out there. Since it commands a large audience and is popular, your website should absolutely be on there as a way of growing its brand awareness. Twitter has its own internal search engine, and the more your posts are listed, the better chance you have of growing your organic search outside of Twitter as you gain followers and recognition.

SEM Strategy: F is for Facebook—Are You Friendly?

Friday, January 7th, 2011

No matter what service or product your website provides, you need to reach out to your target audience and make contact. Social media is that tool. Although the nature of something like Facebook largely depends on the company managing it, social networking falls somewhere in-between the “contact us” form and the media relations people; it’s the piece that can act as the “human element” of your company.

Once you have a Facebook fan page established for your website, put a link to it on all of your relevant material like press releases, news kits, announcements and sales. Promote your website through your social networking, and your social network through your website. You can also reach out and post unique content for your Facebook site, and devote some time to connecting with your audience on Facebook—answering questions, responding to positive feedback, and other, minor customer-service related tasks.

Ideally, you will have a search engine optimization or marketing person keeping an eye on the content that goes in and out of the blog, and keeps it from turning into yet another site to dump links into. The beauty of Facebook, until another, bigger social media network takes over, is how people use it to interact with each other. Worldwide, there are more than 200 million users on this network. If you can even get 1% of them interacting with your company on a regular basis then you’ve succeeded in perfecting your social media strategy, and most likely, your search engine marketing tactics.

Although Facebook does not directly lead to profits, it is part of the campaign that creates brand awareness, and it is a fairly easy (and relatively cheap) way to go about getting attention from a highly-connected audience.

Keyword Research: AKA, Why You Hired A SEO Expert

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

One of the least exciting but most useful aspects of building a properly optimized website is keyword research. What it boils down to, basically, is taking every single product or “thing” your business sells, and finding the best words to describe this product in a way that helps increase your rankings, traffic and eventually, turn your website into a profitable and valuable source of income. You could do this yourself, since you are an expert about your product, but it takes a lot of time, and someone creative enough to think sideways about using the proper words to best describe what you do or sell.

Fact: Keyword research is about as grueling as the job of a web solutions or search engine optimization expert gets. It is time-consuming, tedious and tricky, if you want it done right. Most of the time, optimizing experts consider keywording as a kind of Internet challenge, to see how they can “one up” your competition.

SEO Tip: Don’t get caught up in the social media hype, and jump on the “#1 ranking on Google” bandwagon without making sure your website has been completely researched, has a optimized keywords input, a working CMS and generally is in good shape to compete.

No matter what you do, do not overhaul your website before the holiday season, especially if your company tends to generate more revenue in the fourth quarter. We will discuss in an upcoming blog how change can be a very bad thing for web marketing.
